Life Changing Books To Read In Your Twenties
Have you ever experienced a booked where everything just seemed to click? Where you finally realized “I now know what I need to do” or “I’m ready to finally start”. Whether you have or haven’t, I’ve put together a list of books that have had this impact on me, and hoping it will have the same affect on you, especially if you’re in you twenties.
And you don’t even have to be a reader to appreciate these books. When I first dove into consuming personal development content when I was twenty-three, I couldn’t even remember the last time I read a book that wasn’t for school. I thought reading was boring and it couldn’t keep my attention. I decided to start off with an audiobook from audible. I dedicated listening to it while I was getting ready in the morning, commuting to work and while walking on my lunch break. When I got to the end of that first book and can whole heartedly say my life was changed for the better.
So lets get into it! Here are 4 life changing books everyone in their twenties should read:
The 5 Second Rule by Mel Robbins
This was the fist personal development book that really clicked for me. I listened to this one of audible and really enjoyed the authors narration. The overall concept behind this book is when you find yourself not wanting to do something that you really need to do, you are to stop that habit loop/way of thinking by counting down 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 and get up and go do that thing!
I know, I know it sounds super simple, but it works and this book is totally worth diving into! Its so applicable to every aspect in your life. When you don’t want to make those phone calls at work, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 DO IT. When you’re thinking “those dishes can wait until the morning - 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 GET IT OVER WITH. This book turned the procrastinator in me to a doer. If you read this book in your twenties, think about how far ahead you’ll be from the rest of the general population that consistently put things off.
Unfu*k Yourself by Gary John Bishop
If I had to name one book that had the most impact on me, it would be Unf*ck Yourself. I listened to this one on audible and was very thrown off by the authors Scottish accent at first, but grew to like it by the end. I then went back a year later and read the hard copy and highlighted throughout. When I find myself doubting what I’m capable of accomplishing, I always go back to this one.
This book challenges you to throw out “truth” you’ve only ever known about yourself and embrace what life really has to offer. I grew up in a dysfunctional household where I was made to feel like everything I did was wrong and no one cared what I had to say. I strolled into my early twenties being timid and thinking that everyone was judging me. This book helped me break out of my shell, unlearn this negative thought pattern, and finally help me launch an Instagram account to share my passions with the world.
This quick read/listen is a must for anyone with issues with confidence in their twenties. Get ready to confront what’s holding you back!
Can’t Hurt Me by David Goggins
This book left me speechless and mind blown pretty much on every page. This is is a quick read that I read on my kindle for free through the Libby App, or it can be purchased on Amazon.
David Goggins is a Navy SEAL and Ultra Athlete who has not only accomplished incredible things in his career but also overcame extreme adversity throughout his childhood and young adult life. This book will give you perspective on what every human is capable over overcoming and will give you a kick in the ass to get up and make something of your life. I constantly found myself saying “If this man can get through this, then why the hell can’t I do xyz”.
This easy read will show you that the obstacles in your way aren’t really so bad after all and motivate you to take action NOW instead of next week, next month or next year.
Everything if Figureoutable by Marie Forleo
This book came to me at the most perfect time in life. This was another one that I read on my Kindle for free through the Libby app, but can also be purchased on Amazon. Cut to April 2020 of the global pandemic. My wedding was scheduled for July of that year and the world was one big unknown at that point. I was feel extremely stressed out with the uncertainty of it all and the depression that my “dream wedding” might not happen.
I opened up this book and let content soak in. As you might have guessed from the title, this book is all about figuring out the hard stuff. No matter how impossible, Marie explains that there is a solution to every problem. She gives countless examples throughout the book from her followers and how this mindset shift will change your life for the better.
The result for me? Decreased stress throughout the 3 months leading up to our wedding. Figuring out a new plan that would work for us and COVID guidelines. Planning a completely new wedding at our house and creating a new “dream wedding” for us. Everything worked out for the best and I can without a doubt say that this book played a part in that.
Have you read any of these books already? Have any other recommendations for me? Let me know in the comments!
